Haha! Leave it to The Onion. Hmm, looks to cut right to the chase though. Eliminate rank ups, objectives, run & gun, etc...and shoot 'em right in the face!

The thing that puts me off this game more than anything else is the weapon damage evident from the various in-game videos.
I don't expect all weapons to be one-shot-kills but I do expect firearms to have a fairly high lethality in games, so a few rounds should be sufficient to kill someone. From the videos though it looks like you practically have to unload an entire clip into an opponent before they go down (much like most stock FPS games these days).
I personally love the use of objectives in games and something (anything) that forces players to think and act as part of a team.

Weapons damage is a very tricky thing for any developer
First you have to deal with taste. Some people like a hardcore type of damage while others prefer something along the lines of softcore. This sort of thing has been debated over and over as seen in this forum. Some say one is better than the other and each side has their reasons for falling in one camp vs the other. The reality is, its simply a matter of taste and in the end, the developer just simply can't please everyone.
More importantly though, weapons damage has a profound affect on the overall gameplay. (I'm not talking about balance here, that's a totally separate topic.) For example, hardcore mode in games generally tends to slow the game down a bit. You find more people sneaking around, sniping, etc, and far less people playing run and gun. That change in turn can have a much broader effect on other aspects of the game such as weapons balance, objectives, teamwork, etc.
So with brink, what i see is a game that is largely focused on objectives, and there are a lot of them. This game isn't like COD where you have just one objective like defuse this bomb, capture this flag, etc. Yes, there may be one "Team" objective but at the same time, each class has got separate objectives that they can do to help their team complete the main objective. Each objective takes time to complete. Whether its hacking a terminal, setting up a turret, blowing up a lock, etc.
So what does this have to do with weapons damage? It's about time. Objectives take time and you need to give the player time to complete the objective. If weapons were to have high damage then you could easily run into a scenario where objectives never get completed. People would be too busy killing one another or trying to not get killed to even bother doing the objectives which is exactly what they are trying to avoid here. Now some could argue, "well just make the objectives take less time to complete." While the argument may be valid, its just simply not what they went for here. The reason for that is probably a combination of balancing and the style of game play they were looking for. They have made it very clear from the beginning that what they wanted to do was to create a shooter that focused on team play and objectives and moved away from simply being a game all about your KDR.

If you're the type of gamer who can only play a certain way, then you as a gamer need to know that about yourself and thus choose your games wisely.....the ones that cater YOUR style of gameplay. That also means you need to do your research before you buy. As with you Jo3, I can adapt. We'll find out here soon enough if the game is worth adapting for.

I personally love the use of objectives in games and something (anything) that forces players to think and act as part of a team. I rather have the game be based on skill then realism or insta gibbing. I guess that's the difference between old school Quake vets and the new bred. I also don't see what your talking about when you say you have to unload an entire clip into someone in newer games? What games are like that? Black ops core mode was only 2-3 bullets to kill someone and Battlefield was 3-5 which I think is reasonable for troops using body Armour. If you think one or two bullets kills someone instantly your mistaken military rounds aren't meant to kill their targets they are meant to incapacitate and penetrate cover. If you think I'm full of it just do some math here is the data http://denkirson.xanga.com/735016527/black-ops/ for all the "New" Shooters Den is even going to data mine Brink when he can.
