Post Re: Mousepads
Thats my new mouse pad, cheap and good.
And it glides really good, not like the cloth pads I had in the 90s :D

How much does that RocketFish cost at Best Buy? Last time I checked my BB they had nothing good. I ordered an X-TRAC RIPPER from newegg.com. Shelled out about 15 bucks for it....very nice, very slick. If you like a large surface to play on (and this one is thin), this a great pad.

The best mousepads believe it or not are made of cloth. They have the best coefficient of Friction when it comes to precision aiming you don't want to slip when your trying to aim at something as small a pixel.

ive heard people argue for cloth and ive heard people argue for hard mats. I personally like the razer destructor i got, yes i no its kinda expensive for a mouse pad but i got no complaints what so ever about it.

Yea some people prefer plastic or aluminum pads but from a pure physics standpoint cloth has the better material properties for stopping acceleration so you can stop your mouse more precisely.

==Warning == I am an Engineer and the following is MATH, you know that stuff in school you hated

Friction before sliding = Coefficient of friction x Normal Force

Image

Friction Coefficients

Teflon offers the lowest coefficient of friction (0.1 or less) (most mice have Teflon glides so you need a mouse pad with a high coefficient of friction
for proper use)(Works well with hard plastic, glass and metal pads)
Aluminum 0.61 (you need teflon for this or else it will eat your mouse and not glide well also if it's to smooth it can interfere with optic mice)
Wood 0.25–0.5 *(yea we all know your to cheap to buy a mouse pad)
Plastic ~ 0.35 varies with type
cloth higher coefficient of friction than other materials also less not as sleek or smooth so lower speed and more control which in my eyes makes it better

Slick vs. rough:

Newbies often fail to realize that smoother is not always better. You have to decide what you are most interested in: speed (smooth lower Coefficient of friction) or control (more texture, more surface area, Higher Coefficient of Friction). We hesitate to say rough, because a good mouse pad surface will never have a high coefficient of friction.

Moving a mouse around takes a lot of work.
When the computer mouse is just sitting on the mouse pad, the mouse has a weight (W) which produces a normal force (N). N = W.
Image
When you actually place your hand on the mouse and move it, the system changes. Now the force of your hand (F) upon the mouse changes the system. The downward (y) component of your hand adds to the normal force when determining the force of friction. The mouse will move when the x component of F [Fcos(theta)] > the force of static friction (f) which is equal to µs(N + Fsin(theta)). Once the mouse begins moving Fcos(theta) only has to be greater than the kinetic force of friction, µk(N + Fsin(theta)).
You do work (W) equal to DFcos(theta). D is the distance the mouse travels. Any force in the y direction is wasted effort, so trying to keep theta close to 0 will help reduce the force that you need to apply by reducing wasted effort and by not adding to the force of friction that must be overcome. Every time you have to click and drag your mouse, you make your life just that much more difficult.

Also if you fail to understand science the price of cloth mouse pads is normally less than $15 vice the $30 dollar plastic and aluminum ones

Nice explanation of the physics of mouse movement, but you forgot to compensate for pinkie drag in you're equations.
A well trained pinkie can eliminate any and all shortfalls that a hard surface offers and you can still enjoy the benefits of a gaming surface that will last considerably longer (and therefore be more economical) than a soft pad.

Normal Force can be modified to (i also don't see how people can drag their pinkie I never had but then again I use a claw like grip with my middlfinger on resting on the scrollwheel and ring finger on the right on the mouse right mouse button) :) include that but it's really just overly completing things, we just need a baseline for comparing the different materials of construction. Also while some high end pads are more durable than cloth some aren't and you can buy about 3 cloth pads for the price of most aluminum and plastic ones so durability isn't an issue for me. I've used plenty of different Pads(I have a solid RAtpadz one for my laptop because I need one that will not bend for it) and it is preference in the end. But I feel cloth offers the best control and I don't think the speed advantage other surfaces have compares also over-sized pads made of cloth are easier to find and I like the extra arm room.

this one is the best i have had in a long time..well worth the money IMo for gaming. its dual sided..one is quite slick , very fast movements for twitch shooters, the other is more precise. Nice size with lots of real-estate to move on.

I just switched up from a SteelSeries 4HD (cloth pad) to a SteelSeries SX aluminum pad. The SX is the best i've used to date. I'm a palmer (not a claw user) and currently switch btwn the G500 and Razer Imperator. Like the Imperator better b/c there is no flange on the bottom interfering with hover and roll.
