Great topic and I agree that Twitter is very useful and mostly important. I too was a skeptic before talking to Jock about it. Since then I've been a believer.

I was going to argue that Tweets should be written for your followers and not the other way around. But it's that kind of strong opinion that can stifle progress/innovation. Maybe Twitter will become an expression of personal reflection rather than a serious news outlet. However, it is tweets of personal reflection that keep people away from Twitter. Everyone I have spoken to regarding Twitter ALL at some point say that they don't want to know what a person is doing right at that moment and that's why they won't use Twitter. Even I said that... at first. Then I learned that there is a valuable side to it.

I have alway been struck that what is old is new again.
What would Marconi and Morse think?
Wireless communication is the transfer of information over a distance without the use of electrical conductors or "wires".The distances involved may be short (a few meters as in television remote control) or long (thousands or millions of kilometers for radio communications). When the context is clear, the term is often shortened to "wireless". Wireless communication is generally considered to be a branch of telecommunications.

Twitter communication is the transfer of information over distance and compresses time without the use of electrical conductors or "wires". The Characters involved may be short (only a few characters are allowed). When the context is clear, the term is often shortened to "Tweet". Twitter communication is generally considered to be a branch of Instant Messaging.

I've been using Twitter for ages (WAYYYYYY before it was cool :)) and I think that it's a great way to get news quickly, I'd recommend Twitter to anyone who wants to stay informed.

Interesting that JDogg said the word "cool". I think that most gamers think of themselves as "beyond" cool and that Twitter now has too much mass popularity for them to consider using it.

Personally, I think this reasoning is why most of the competitive gamers idle on IRC (I mean...who the hell knows about IRC nowadays?).

Exclusivity drives people away from things like Twitter and towards ancient tools like IRC.

I understand the feelings behind that (I tend to run counter to trends)...nevertheless, as JDogg said...Twitter is a great way to stay informed. And next year, Google Wave comes out...so we can all adopt that as the next great tech tool for communication.

Good point Jock, but I don't think you'd be seeing fourzerotwo hanging around on IRC making an announcement every now and then.
