Resistance was futile.

The CoD2 modification, Rise of the Resistance is for all intents and purposes dead.

This is the note pinned to the front of the RoTR website on the 21st of October:

Hello everyone and thanks for taking the time to read this.

Now, first and foremost, I want to say thank you to all Community Members from the modding community that came on board, and helped out as much as they did. A special thank you to Tally, for starting this project, fronting all the resources and finances for the websites, servers, etc, etc.

Now, due to alot of complications and unforeseen obsticales, both in the creation of Rise of the Resistance and all of the Dev Teams personal lives, jobs, commitments, etc. we unfortunately have to shut down production.

It truely saddens me at this point, to see this project come to an end, especially after seeing how MUCH there has been completed. Almost 600 megs of files.

So near completion, yet with what needs to be done, we are still so far from the finish line.  But again, due to unforeseen problems, the key people in the Dev Team that would make this possible to complete, must tend to other things for their own reasons.

With all of that said, I do not believe ANY one on the Dev Team would want to see all this hard work and time lost.  Deleted from existance, so to speak as if it never happened.  So, over the next few days or week, I will be putting files in ZIP's, and releasing them to the public.  To use on your server's, to put into your own modifications, or to continue working on for the betterment of the COD community.

Rumors that the collapse of RoTR was imminent have been circulating for the past two and half weeks. About the same time we were recording BASH Episode 38, our crack news staff learned of the rumor that Tally had quit as lead of the project.

While at the time we treated the news as yet another unconfirmed rumor, in hindsight, it would explain Tally's downcast, sad and sullen behavior on the webcast as he must have been dealing with this sharp blow.

Many CoD and WWII devotees had pinned a lot of hope on the RoTR project. RoTR was supposed to keep CoD2 going for some time to come and was going to be the refuge for the many CoD fanatics who hated to see the series go "present day".

Sadly, it was not to be.

Some of the early promise that could be seen in this project was cataloged on the proto-BASHandSlash.com website, BASH...the Blog.

You can check out the numerous articles we wrote on this effort here

Then came BASH 20. This was a webcast we did with BubbaGump (Ben), then a project lead and proved to be - in our opinion - the "hype-zenith" for this project.

Supposedly due out at Christmas time, Tally had told us in later webcasts that Activision was going to pay for a proper DVD-pressing, which would be available in selected stores. This would have been another impressive feat if it could have been pulled off: community and game-producer interaction!

What went wrong?

With none of the primes responding to our queries right now and much of the talking being conducted behind closed forums - we only hear snippets. Snippets like: key team members who may have walked away with large chunks of this mod, unwilling or unable to fork it over to the rest of the team.

However, some members were clearly very close to releasing their bit. Here, for example, is this comment from Tropheus (the French team), on the RoTR website:

Looks like the French team was very close to finishing at least.

Stay tuned...BASHandSlash.com will be looking into the reasons behind this sad state of affairs and will report on anything we hear as soon as we hear it.

Like a dead parrot, nailed to its perch, one of the only things left on the RoTR website, cod2-expansion.com , is this movie trailer. You can see the immense efforts that may have gone to waste with the folding of this project:

But, what of other community mods?

JD's (codhq.com) Unbound Forces are making excellent progress apparently. But interestingly, another mod, Remember September has gone mysteriously quiet. The members of Remember September have been hard to get a hold of recently and their website has been down. Though, late word suggests that has been due to a former member (Draven) halting the webhosting. As well, rumor has it that one of their leads, MajorPain has made it known that he is continuing on with the project and has been seen trying to recruit ex-RoTR modders.

We can only hope that folks have learned something from the false starts made in CoD2 as the community heads into CoD4: There is strength in numbers.

The CoD2 community was stretched so thin and fractured so deep - it is no surprise that there has been so few successful community ventures.

Let's hope our community leaders have learned the right lessons as we head into the exciting world of Modern Warfare.

Discuss this situation here .
