I saw this coming the day i joined

The above quotes are from members of the former Rise of the Resistance Forums. They capture the sadness and exasperation of the whole CoD2 community at the sudden demise of what was a highly anticipated Community-led modification to Activision's very successful stock game.

What was to be a near total-conversion of CoD2 that featured a Italian, French and Polish resistance fighters, and would have had both a single and multiplayer component, is now a smoldering ruin. A wreck. A broken dream.

Those riding the dream for so long are now stumbling around dumbfounded and wondering how this could have happened.

Well how could it?

In this Episode of BASH, one of the original Development Team Leaders of RoTR, as it was known in the community, gives us the straight dope regarding its collapse.

Our guest is none other than, uber-scripter, eXtreme+ modder and now eXtreme+ leaguer, {PST}*Joker. The post-mortem he gives us, is insightful. Here are some of his reason's for RoTR's fall:

  • Real Life intruded into member's lives
  • There were Dev Team Defections
  • Lack of Leadership plagued the project
  • CoD4's arrival re-focused community priorities

All of the above seems to have conspired in a perfect-storm-like event to take down this community high flier.

BASHandSlash.com has been following this mod for six months and there had been excellent promise surrounding it.  It was not long ago that Tally had come on BASH to tell us that the Rise of the Resistance, the expansion pack for Call of Duty 2, would not only be available for download free of charge later this year it would also be available for purchase on DVD.

Activision was supposedly backing the CoD community-led project by supplying RotR with the resources to market the game in magazines, on-line outlets, and maybe even brick and mortar stores.

Well, none of that will come to pass now.

A few weeks ago, the heart and soul of the project, Tally resigned, ostensibly, due to family and work commitments.

While he handed the torch to {PST}*Joker, the turbulent wake he left behind sunk even more Devs. Seeing Tally make for the exits, they bailed almost instantly. Scrambling to restore order, Joker immediately called for team members to send in their portion of this complex undertaking.

800 Mb later, Joker's drives were groaning with what turned out to be a mod that is 25% shy of completion.

Not everyone turned over their work though.

Some like Tropheus (France) and Bushman (Montreal, Que), are keeping their (own) dream alive by channeling their remaining energies to create a "mini" RoTR mod of their own - featuring the characters that they and their French Resistance group created. Here is Tropheus' post from the iwnation.com forums:

Very sad news in fact !!!

But some guys still working for a modification. Soldiers of Shadows will rising up soon as i said in this post....Soldiers of Shadows

Bushman and I was in this expansion (great adventure) and we decide to follow our job as we said at start.... we to far to stop now...

3 maps are finished and we began to script another is at 50 % and the las at 40 %...

So if you want to help us you're welcome... (contact are in the other post)

see you soon

Tropheus

For Joker and All staff of RORT (sic), We passed Bushman and I some very good moment with you. It's a shame that it's finished !

Shame indeed.

What is a shame is that the folks who have brought the mod to the point where the finish line was finally visible, have surrendered.

Joker has not.

He is challenging the community to continue the project and bring it to fruition.

Will *you* be up to his challenge?

Joker is threatening to release the current files - all 800 Mb - in a few weeks.

Hello everyone and thanks for taking the time to read this.

Now, first and foremost, I want to say thank you to all Community Members from the modding community that came on board, and helped out as much as they did. A special thank you to Tally, for starting this project, fronting all the resources and finances for the websites, servers, etc, etc.

Now, due to alot of complications and unforeseen obsticales, both in the creation of Rise of the Resistance and all of the Dev Teams personal lives, jobs, commitments, etc. we unfortunately have to shut down production.

It truely saddens me at this point, to see this project come to an end, especially after seeing how MUCH there has been completed. Almost 600 megs of files.

So near completion, yet with what needs to be done, we are still so far from the finish line.  But again, due to unforeseen problems, the key people in the Dev Team that would make this possible to complete, must tend to other things for their own reasons.

With all of that said, I do not believe ANY one on the Dev Team would want to see all this hard work and time lost.  Deleted from existance, so to speak as if it never happened.  So, over the next few days or week, I will be putting files in ZIP's, and releasing them to the public.  To use on your server's, to put into your own modifications, or to continue working on for the betterment of the COD community.

Again, thank you to EVERYONE for everything.
- Joker

However, Joker will refrain from releasing the mod files if he gets some feedback that the modders out there in the community want to complete it.

He has challenged these modders to come and help him finish the promise of RoTR.

So get photshopping and send us your design today.

In this webcast we finish part two of our interview with PST Joker from mycallofduty.com.

In this episode Joker, an original member of the Rise of the Resistance development team tells us the reasons why it died - and tries to elicit help to resurrect it.

He also gives us some behind the scenes info on the CoD4 Demo download debacle at Yahoo

and he fills us in with some Real Life drama in his home state of California.

1. We blogged this week about the sad news that Rise of the Resistance is dead. Walk us through what happened. Why did Tally leave?

I've been talking to the French team - they are thinking of pursuing  and continuing on the work. I heard rumors that they had been the only group unwilling to cooperate when Tally left - is that true?

2. You played CoD4 the Demo by now i'm sure. What did you think?

I've heard that the folks at eXtreme+ have been ripping into, cutting it open looking to see how it works.
What if anything have you found that is interesting? Have you already thought about modding possibilities?

Can you fill us in on your ideas for potential modifications?

3. The 2007 Fire Season in SoCal.

I wanted to highlight the work you down there in RL (Real Life).

You've been right in the midst of one of the worst fire seasons in recent memory down there in California. Tell us little bit about what you have seen.

If people want to donate some money to those who have been displaced where can they do so?
