When Chris Lemley, President of Team Pandemic emailed me to tell me that Nabore would be available for an interview on BASH, the sudden rush quickly turned to panic as I realized the pressure would be on me to ask this legendary, world-class CoD player at least one intelligent question.
Would he laugh at my noobishness and rub me into the ground, nose first - as he does to most of the opponents he faces on the CoD battlefield?
Would I be up to the challenge?
After all, Joe Amorosa , aka Nabore is a giant in this game. His poise behind a gun and his commanding presence behind the mic as a strat caller and team captain, belies the fact that he is only 21 years old. Young he may be, but he's already a legend in FPS gaming circles - both as a player and as a leader.
Within a day, Joe made contact and set up a meet. It was bang-bang-bang. Clearly he was as efficient in real life as he was in-game.
The next day, seeing him online, I quickly Skyped him, unfortunately, causing his game-application to crash (Skype tends to do that). Anyone else would have cussed me out. The ultimate professional, Nabore asked me to call him back at the appointed hour so that he could finish practicing with his team.
His scrim over, we hooked up and I was unsurprised at his manner: quick and efficient. He's a confident young man too and exacting. He also does not mince words. It truly is uncanny how his style of play is so similar to his own personality.
You can tell from the webcast why he is one of the premiere leaders in the biz. Always praising his charges, he is ready to support his teammates and yes, criticise their play when needed. While the criticism may be necessary, Nabore does not make scenes and always behaves in a respectful, yet assertive way.
BASH 42: Stratcallin
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to BASH - the voice of the call of duty community.
BASHers and SLASHers, thanks for downloading this program, glad you could all come back - my name is Jock Yitch, that's Yitch with a Y and I'm your host for the next half hour of fps gaming entertainment, information and plain old noob fragging excitement.
It's been a good week at BASHandSlash.com and we're getting readers and listeners from all over the world downloading our material. Even a few downloads this week from Iraq and several from Iran this week. Hopefully one of those hits came from our audio engineer, DJX who is still unaccounted for over there.
Regardless of where you live, remember everyone, come to the BASHandSlash.com forums and tell us what you think of the show.
Also, we have resumed voting on the Call of Duty Hall of Fame. In Round 2 we have a new crop of nominees that will be voted on for induction. Come to BASHandSlash.com to find out more.
BASH nation, today we have another great program for you that is guaranteed to cure you of any Call of Duty noobaphobia you may have.
On today's program we are honored to have pro-gamer, Joe Amorosa, aka Nabore, the premiere strat-caller of his generation and current leader of Team Pandemic.
With the Call of Duty community ready for the upcoming release of CoD4: Modern Warfare, we have Joe on to discuss his role with his team, which if you don't know is one of the top CoD2 teams in the world, Team Pandemic.
Not only will he discuss what he's been up to with them...he's going to talk to us about gaming strategy and share with us some of the tips and tricks he has used to make his teams the premiere squads in CoD gaming.
He will also share his views on CoD4 and tell us what he's picked up by playing the XBox demo of that game.
This is going to be a rockin' interview, so without further ado, let me turn to my new audio engineer, DJ Skeebo - pump it Skeebo!
1. Introductions:
Ladies and gentlemen, one of the most respected CoD2 players in the world...he's captained Team Pandemic to numerous titles including the CEVO Professional back in September, soon after that they captured TGL's highest honor, we have Joe Amorosa aka Nabore on the program.
2. A short autobiography of your gaming career:
- how did you start fps gaming?
- how did you get to TeamPandemic (formerly Shockwave)?
- how did you progress to be the Team Captain.
3. What makes a good leader?
Pro Gamers are a tough bunch, with a lot of confidence. Some would say large egos. How do you lead a group like that? What makes a good leader in the pro-game?
4. A few months ago we had your former shot-gunner on BASH, rob-wiz. He left to go to The Doctors. How did you find out about his move? How did you react?
(We interviewed rob-wiz after he left TP: read the interview here )
5. Keith has rejoined TP I believe (he was a former member). Tell us a little about the current lineup. And what will you be doing in the latter half of 2007/8.
6. You have taught me a lot about tactics and strategy in CoD2 with the numerous articles you have posted. I wanted to get your thoughts on the keys to victory in CoD2:
a) Map Knowledge:
- How long does it take you to get to know a map? How do you study it?
- Do you come up with names for the various buildings?
- Tips and tricks for efficient map navigations:
i) Strafing a wall (running/walking alongside of a flat wall, while holding your strafe key, will make your character move about 20% faster.)
ii) Running with a pistol
iii) Stealthiness in CoD2
iv) Avoiding the hit: "bobbing and weaving"
b) Nades
- What is the proportion of nade-kills in a typical pro-match Grenades?
- What is a "set" nade?
- In a map like Toujane (any map will do) how many set positions will you have memorized?
- What is an "impact" nade?
- Do you have any tips for consistently throwing "perfect" set nades?
- Does jumping or your own player speed affect nade distance?
c) Strategy
- What are the key winning strategies you use in a game
- Do you run set plays?
- Could we set up a hypothetical game and devise some strats, just to see what the mechanics might be like. Take us through how you would set up the offense/defense.
CoD4
- You played CoD4 on the XBox, what did you like/dislike?
- You have said that you do not believe there is any longer for leaning in CoD4. Do you still think that?
- Why were players "invulnerable" when leaning around corners (lean glitch) in CoD2.
- Are you making a case as well against "frogging" - ie jumping when ironsighted? Why?
- You have suggested a different kind of health system in CoD4 due to the fact that the nades are not very effective and the introduction of the perk system. What is that suggestion?
