BASH 47: {PST}*Joker drops da bomb
Written by jockyitch

At the stroke of midnight this New Year's eve, the long wait for Call of Duty 4 Server Admins and players will be over. Two months after the release of CoD4: Modern Warfare, the folks behind the eXtreme+ mod, at mycallofduty.com , will release version 1.0 of the CoD4 mod:

X4: Extreme Warfare

One of the senior staffers at mycallofduty.com, and BASH webcast regular, {PST}*Joker is on again this week to discuss this monumental mod.

Joker discusses why X4 was necessary and how the Call of Duty community can tweak the game itself to suit everyone's tastes.

You don't like air strikes? Delete them.

Hate the choppers? Get rid of 'em.

Not amused by the regeneration health system? Replace it with a health-pack based one.

These are just some of the myriad of changes that Joker and his folks have made to CoD4. And, as you can imagine - it's the tip of the iceberg when it comes to modding the game.

X4-Pro

One of the interesting things in the works for X4 is a competitive version:

{PST}*Joker: we have requested that the pro-gaming community send us their remarks on how to modify CoD4 to suit the competitive modding scene.

The biggest issue we have heard is that the pro gamers think it is a bit too easy to pick up the game. They want to put a bit more gap between the skilled pros and the pub players. We've asked them to
suggest ways to do this. Eventually we would like to come up with an X4-Pro version

If you are a competitive gamer, send us your thoughts and we will pass them on to Joker. Several teams are already mulling over this request. NOTE: Joker is not talking about a PAM-like mod here - he is suggesting modifying the game itself to suit the competitive scene.

The CoD MoD Scene Status

While it appears that with a few exceptions that the CoD2 modding scene is stuck in first-gear, the CoD4 modding community is racing ahead.

DAMN, PAM IV, ACE and now X4 have all now been released. Heat of Battle Mod is in the works as well.

How does that sit with uber-modder Joker?

Not well. It appears that many of the modders are still not communicating. Given the relative size of the CoD4 world, having the few modders we have plying their trade alone and hording information does not help community. We need a critical mass to move this game forward and compete with the Counter-Strikes of the world.

How do we increase communication and data sharing?

Joker, in this episode has some suggestions.

- Increase communication and information sharing amongst the mod community.
- Induce energetic would-be-modders to participate in an "open"-modding environment. Joker plans on doing so by helping out these modders-in-training. The trade off will be that Joker's folks will help them learn modding and in turn the modders will eventually help us in the community.

Show Notes for BASH 47:

1. Introductions

2. We last left you at the funeral for the Rise of the Resistance. There were a lot of disgruntled people in the community after that mod tanked and frankly we were all surprised it fell apart.

We all felt that the modding community was finally coalescing - especially after the peace between the the folks behind the raidersmerciless.com and the mycallofduty.com (extreme+) modding camps.

What is the STATUS of the CoD modding community?

Start off with CoD2 side of things:

3. Have you heard of any CoD2 mod since CoD4 has been out?

a) extreme+ v2.3?
b) extreme+ v2.4 is in the works?
c) Remember September is apparently still around
d) Unbound Forces apparently is still going on.

4. What is going on in the CoD4 modding scene?

a) DAMN

b) PAM IV - Bulletworm

c) Tactical Night Mod - ZeRoY

d) AWE - Tally

e) ACE - Marc

f) Heat of Battle Mod - BritishBulldog 1

5.

a) What's the deal with the fact that all the modders are doing their own thing? Why does it seem that the modding community is still in disarray and fractious.

Is it a lack of team spirit. people putting themselves before the cause. Do we need more people willing to work for the community and not for themselves?

6. Can we come up with a Open Source Standard for modding CoD4?

- why are all the modders FF'ing their files?

7. So what is going on in the eXtreme+ arena when it comes to CoD4?

* mycallofduty.com staffers are working on the beta for extreme+ for CoD4. It has been in release
for the past week and will be fully released at the beginning of the new year.

a) What is the new mod called?

* X4: eXtreme Warfare.

b) That's a cool name - who came up with that?

(ed: hint...Jock did)

8. Why did CoD4 need the X4 mod?

9. Where did you get the ideas for the changes in CoD4 - and what were some of those ideas/requests?

10. What was the most difficult thing about modding in CoD4

11. What are some of the other ideas you guys have been working on.
