BASH 69: GG EG!
Written by jockyitch

With us on BASH this week from the fabled Evil Geniuses (EG) are my fellow Torontonians…Rob (aka Rob-Wiz) and his teammate Ted (W!$eGuy).

Truth be told, I really wanted to call this webcast: BASH 69: The "Eh?" Team. I am sure you are glad I did not.

Though EG is mostly Canadian, they sure don't live up to the pacifist push-overs that are the usual stereotypes of us most northern of North Americans. On the contrary, EG is in your face and un-apologetically so.

The Webcast

EG is currently, the indisputably finest CoD4 team in North America. In this webcast, Ted and Rob tell us how they got to the top of the heap in CoD4.

And we find out the circumstances behind Rob joining EG (see this article). As well, the EG guys talk to us about their LAN experiences in Europe, especially their incredible game at I33 with Tek-9.

The Tek9 game at I33:

Not just a collection of "pro-gamers", EG is a team composed of long-time friends...friends that just happen to be some of the most talented FPS hardcore gamers anywhere. Here is the EG Squad:

In this webcast, we explore EG's classic head-to-head match-ups with North American rivals Team Pandemic this year at NERV1 and NERV2 and of course online in CEVO-P.

In the discussion, we try to find out why EG plays TP so tough.

Once known as "The Doctors", the team left the TF2 gaming scene to come to CoD4 and was noticed by The Evil Geniuses gaming group and quickly snapped up. The EG brain-trust has proven prescient has their new CoD4 team has screamed up the charts to be known as the best team in these here parts. Without a doubt there are many intangibles in their play that has propelled them to their number one ranking.

One reason for this must surely be the simple, but effective strategizing of their leader Wombat (voted best CoD player in the original version of the game). The second reason has to be the arrival of Deny, whose SMG'ing and smart play has turned losses into wins in many of their matches. As well...w!$eGuy's aggressive play has also paid great dividends.

But as their many defeated opponents would admit, it has been the play of "rob-wiz" that has propelled them over the top. Earlier this year after CEVO-P, we here at BASHandSlash.com suggested that Rob could very well be the best CoD4 player in NA . After NERV #2, there's no question of it. Rob's death-defying Deagle-work in Strike and in Vacant during Sunday's matches at that LAN, testify mightily in defense of that title.

Note: You can vote for Rob in the Call of Duty Hall of Fame balloting right now: Vote here (you require to be registered on our boards to do so).

If you are in Europe and have not had a chance to see EG, good news. We discover in this program that EG is making a huge swing through Europe this year, starting on July 21st. The LANS they will appear at include the-eXperience, the eSports Festival in Antwerp, I34 in the UK and one in Mallorca Spain.

Good luck to EG at these LANS and go Canada go!

SHOW NOTES:

Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to BASH, Jock Yitch here. This week we speak with some members of one of the best CoD4 teams on the planet, from myeg.com, the Evil Geniuses

A few of the guys from EG have graced us and have come on the program to discuss how exactly they got to this position

With us from EG are fellow Torontonians...Rob-Wiz and his teammate W!$eGuy

1. @Rob:

Rob: You have been on the program before - way back in the summer of 2007. Just after our webcast, you decided to trade in your CoD2 shotgun and you broke with Team Pandemic, whom you'd been playing for and you moved on with your gaming career. You joined The Doctors, a fabled team that featured original-CoD legend Wombat Larsen and you went on to play TF2 where you dominated. Then The Doctors joined the Evil Geniuses gaming outfit on Feb 18 2008 and became their CoD4 team.

a) Why did you go to the Doctors? Did you know you teammates?
b) Did you know you would end up playing CoD4 with them...because at first you played TF2.
c) Playing for so long on CoD2...what was your original reaction to seeing CoD4. Did you feel it would make a strong competitive game?

2. @w!$eGUy

Tell everyone a little about yourself and how you joined the Evil Geniuses.

3.

a) @Rob

Back in March, EG went to Europe to participate in the Multiplay i33 tournament. or those of us from North America who don't follow the European gaming scene, tell me a little bit about that tournament, where was it and how important is it?

b) @w!$eGUy

One of the highlights of that tournament was playing Tek9 on day 3. You guys were down by 8 rounds. Describe the rest of the match. How did you come back? (13-10 on vacant)

You lost to TLR finishing 3rd...but was the Tek9 game something that changed your mental outlook? Something seemed to snap into place after i33 for you...I'm wondering if this game influenced your current ascent.

c) @Rob

After that tournament your lineup changed. Whose currently playing on the team?

    Mark "wombat" Larsen
    Chris "ntt" Gillett
    Ted "w!$eGUy" Georgoudakis
    Robert "rob-wiz" Kennedy

a) Adam "deny" Phan joined in April right after i33. Why did you guys go after "deny". Were you looking for a particular skill set that you were missing during i33?

b) How do you describe your team's gameplay? Do you have a style of play? Or are you flexible depending on the map/opponent. What style do you prefer (rushing/slow-pushers...etc.).

3. @ w!$eGUy

You finished the CEVO-P regular season 11-4.

Some were ranking you as low as 4th going into the CEVO-P finals. This was in spite of finishing second at the first NERV LAN, and third at i33.

a) Why do you think you were being overlooked going into the finals?

b) Did the European ruleset hinder your play when you came back to North America?

c) Were you practicing enough at that time?

4. @Rob

At the end of the playoffs for CEVO-P ...May 01, 2008, you played Team Pandemic in the finals and you beat them on backlot and strike.

Were you intimidated by the thoughts of playing them on one of their strongest maps?

Do you recall the tactics you used back then...i'll probably ask you to contrast them with those you used in the upper bracket finals at NERV#2.

5. @ w!$eGUy

The NERV #2 LAN was highly anticipated by everyone. Did you guys get to bootcamp much prior to the LAN?

Did you think you had any weaknesses going into the matches?

Nabore thinks he spotted something during a match TP had with you on Crash...What did you guys work on?

6. @Rob

Did any team at NERV #2 surprise you?
Who did you think were going to play you tough during that tournament?

a) I think it was on the Saturday that you played TP on strike. They used this "shoot-their-own-player" glitch, to rush into the middle of the map. Did you know what they were doing at the time?

b) Nabore was surprised I think that you guys were able to counter their new found "speed" on mp_strike. How were you able to counter their strong pushes up the middle?

c) After you beat them on strike and then waited for the result of the MobDeep/TP game for the grand finals...did you think you had it in the bag? After all you had beaten TP in CEVO and now again in the upper bracket finals.

7. @W!seguy

a) Your team went into the grand finals against Team Pandemic and you chose one of your best maps. But TP came out strong and you lost that map

mp_citystreets/district: 1-11; 6-2 (EG Choice)

Describe that map a bit...what did you think caused you guys to get run over.

8. @ Rob

a) The next map, TP chose vacant. Did they surprise you with their map choice?
b) Describe that match a bit and what your role is on vacant.

mp_vacant: 9-3; 4-6 (TP Choice)

c) What were the keys to beating Team Pandemic in NERV #2?

9. Put yourself in other team's shoes. What can other teams do to beat you!

10. @W!seguy

After i33 you said that your strongest maps were
#1 District/Citystreets
#2 Vacant

how has that changed after NERV #2 - does strike get on the list?

which maps do you guys think is your worst...and by the way no one is listening to this webcast...so this is just between you and me.

11. @Rob

WIll you be attending i34?
Any other European Lan events?

12. What do you think of the European CoD scene. Why does it seem more vibrant than the North American one?
Is it due to the fact that they have better internet service

13. Have you heard about the promod? Is PAM IV doomed?
