BASH 74: Victory-Europe
Written by jockyitch
Friday, 15 August 2008
Making their triumphant return to North America after achieving a third place at The Experience (TeX) in Denmark and finishing at the top of the heap at the Antwerp eSports Festival (AEF), from teampandemic.net, we have none other than Team Pandemic’s CoD4 team on the program tonight.

Joe Amorosa (Nabore), Pandemic’s team captain and regular on BASH, is on with most of his team: CoD legend, Justin DeMara (prank`) and the newest addition to TP, David “Skinz” Patnode.

Pandemic destroyed the field at AEF and the repercussions are being felt to this day. As a result of being manhandled by the likes of Pandemic, previously-successful CoD4 teams like fnatic and Dignitas have released non-performing players and in the case of MYM, the whole team itself has been sacked by their management and tossed aside like they were candy bar wrappers.

In truth, these squads failed to deliver during the summer Euro LAN season. While their demise was ultimately caused by a lack of success against the Pandemics of the world, their extinction could also be attributed to:

- former star-CoD2 players not catching on to the CoD4 style.
- a hatred of CoD4 gameplay causing poor training habits.

and in some cases like Dignitas:

- unstable players causing inevitable team meltdowns.

But where there are losers, there must be winners and we have their voices on the program.

On the program, the boyz from Pandemic trace their travels to AEF and then to TeX. Fascinating stuff and you will get a good understanding of what it must have been like to travel with them and experience the excitement at these LANs.

Here are some galleries of photos they took at the LANs from their site at teampandemic.net:

We close out the program with a Pandemic/EG anthem which offers a musical response to SK-Gaming.com’s _evan who had predicted in BASH 71 that the North American teams would be wiped out in Europe. That’s right: $ucce$$4me is an added bonus for your listening pleasure on this episode.

Show Notes:

Team Pandemic left for Europe a few weeks ago, to play in the Summer Lans there, we talked about that with Joe on a previous BASH. I think this was the first time you guys went over there as a team. You were about to face some of the toughest CoD4 competition in the world, and I know you folks are famous for being prepared...

@nabore: Rumor has it that you guys did not bootcamp. is that true? if so...how did you prepare for this event. did you change any of the strats you guys showcased at NERV?

@prank`: Did you have enough time to get used to promod?  What are the main differences between PAM IV's sniper and the promod sniper (e.g. AWP, antisway, lerp..etc.). Are the snipers back?

@skinz: You're one of the newest members of team pandemic, do you feel fully integrated with these guys? I saw a lot of teams both at NERV2 and at AEF play with pug players/mercs...how long does it take for someone - even someone with a great deal of talent - to mesh with a team at this level? What is the biggest hurdle you faced in your transition?

AEF

@skinz: Going into AEF in Belgium, the team was coming off a bit of demoralizing loss against EG at NERV2. What was the mood of the group?

@prank: Did you guys know any of the guys at AEF, aside from EG? Did you hang out with other teams - or did you guys stay by yourselves. What did you do prior to playing?

@skinz: Going into AEF, who was favored to win and how did that sentiment change as the matches started to be played?

@skinz`: I'd heard from the EG guys that the seating at AEF was somewhat cramped which affected your team communications, did that hinder you as well? did you have any other difficulties playing in that space?

Describe AEF what did you think of the venue?

@nabore: The Friday went well for you guys coming in first in your Group J matches. But on the Saturday you faced mYm in the semis, possibly one of the best teams in Europe with guys like lukzor, soclon, d1ablo, stat, and mark, and you crushed them 13-4 on mp_crash. Do you recall any of that match?

@skinz:

a) What was the buzz like on Saturday. Usually after the first set of matches people start talking up various teams...who were the players all talking about at AEF?

b) You guys then went on to face Koma Crew. Did anyone think that these guys would play as well as they did and tell me a bit about the match as you recall it. You won by only a 3 game margin: 13-10.

@prank': The upper bracket final game against dignitas went 13-6 on backlot. what struck me in that match was the patience you guys showed against them.

@nabore: The final against the Dutch Koma Crew meant that you would play them first on Crossfire. I don't know of too many teams that like that map. Did you guys practice the map much? How do you like it?

@prank`: KomaCrew ripped through you guys early on in the Grand Final on Crossfire 13-6.  This was a map that for me was dominated by KomaCrew's sniper Roby. You were his counterpart on the other side, how did you see that match. Did you talk about the way he was playing and did you guys do anything to try and counter him?

@skinz: Did you guys talk about doing anything different going into the next map, which was mp_crash. You guys took a really early lead, but that was stopped...how did Koma Crew get back into this game (if i recall it was  a combo of set nades and Roby's sniping)

@nabore: the big difference IMO in this match was Keith. His play in and around the A-house prompted TosspoT, the QUADV shoutcaster to rename it "Keith's House". Were you aware of the game Keith was having?

@prank`: It pretty much a given that the attackers will focus on the A house. What would you guess the percentages are that the bomb is planted at A?

TeX

The eXperience took place in Denmark just after AEF. It had a prize purse of about 27,500 € in cash.

@skinz: You'd been in europe for a week or so by now, did you notice any difference between the teams over there and over here in the way they approached the LAN? Were they more/less intense? More/less professional than a typical NA team? You hear nowadays some animosity towards Americans in Europe, how did the Euros treat you guys?

@skinz: can you give us an idea of what TeX was like? Paint a picture for us of the venue. What was it like to play on TeX's PC's? DId you your own configs? Did you get to bootcamp on their PC's?

@prank`: getting ready for this LAN, the Koma Crew guys aren't there, you must have felt quite pumped coming off the big AEF win, did you guys change anything up all? Strats wise?

@nabore: You folks had a less than spectacular game against the quirky and nade-happy LowLandLions. You fell 13-2 against these guys. What happened?

@prank`: Have you guys been following the aftermath of the big 3 LAN's in terms of what it has done to the teams you played against?

Finally,

@skinz: Nabore said success in Europe would be defined as having a top two finish. After a first at the Antwerp eSports Festival and a third at The eXperience in Denmark, do you think you were able to meet the requirements of his definition?

Prologue and outro:

@Nabore: finally, do you have anything you'd like to say to Richard (_evan) COD4 pundit from sk-gaming.com who suggested that NA would struggle against the middling European teams...much less make it to the finals?
