BASH 76: Little Red Dot
Written by jockyitch
Tuesday, 26 August 2008

This week on BASH we have Phil aka DeathAdder from Team Black Mamba of Clan [JEDI] from Singapore. Phil tells us a little about the South East Asian (SEA) CoD community and what it is like to be a competitive gamer in Singapore.

We called this episode "Little Red Dot" which was Phil's term for his beautiful city.

Phil tells us about the shoutcast outfit of choice in SEA. It's called Gamestah. You can check them out here: Gamestah.com

Gamestah has a different take on shoutcasting. They sync a CoD4 demo file with the mp3 file containing the audio of the shoutcast. This is a great idea because you get the audio and a high quality demo to look at. Because *you* have to do the syncing...this is essentially a manual version of what CoDTV will be all about.

Other cool links that Phil told us about to find out more about the SEA CoD4 scene are:

www.cybergamer.com.au - Australia's community/competitive site
www.maestrogamer.com/forum/ - Regional gamer forum

In addition to the info about the CoD gaming environment in SEA, Phil talks about the style of competitive gaming used in Singapore. What is interesting about this conversation is that he introduces us to the "3-round-switch", which they have wired into PAM. The SEA teams switch sides after three rounds in S&D making scores close on un-even maps. This is a great boon to competitive gaming as spectators will find that the scores stay close and thus the game is far more compelling to watch.

Phil recorded this webcast with me hours before boarding a plane to go to the Sunway Cyber Games in Kuala Lumpur. You can read more about Sunway here. Good luck to JEDI and Phil at Sunway!

Show Notes:

Ladies and Gentlemen Boys and Girls Welcome to BASH. I'm Jock Yitch

Today we will be bringing you everything you need to know about the gaming scene in the Southeast...no I'm not talking about Florida here...I mean the far South East, South East Asia to be exact...

In fact, from the southernmost tip of the Malay peninsula we have Phil aka DeathAdder, he's the sniper on one of Singapore's premiere COD4 team, [JEDI]

Maalai Vanakkam Phil, or should I say Kaalai Vanakkam because its morning where you are. We sometimes take for granted all the amazing technology we have at our fingertips nowadays, but it gives me a great thrill to know that you guys are almost exactly half a world away from me and you sound like you are in the next room.

The reason I have you on the program today is that I am quite fascinated by the Call of Duty world-wide community. Though we play the same game, every culture brings something slightly different to the game. Today we are hopefully going to find out about the South East Asian community and their spin on CoD.

Phil, can you define for us to what extent does the SEA region comprise? Define the community of gamers that you normally interface with. For example here in Toronto, 60% of the gamers I play with are from the Atlantic side of North America, the rest are from the West coast and a few from Britain?

1. You live in Singapore,  and I must confess those of us in the west have a somewhat limited world view sometime, can you tell me a little bit about where you live.

2. Tell me a little bit about your gaming bio if you could.  How did you learn to speak so well...almost as if you were a native North American?

3. What is the gaming scene like in Singapore? How is CoD doing in the SEA market? Who are the big competitors?

4. When i get onto my browser I see about 15000-20000 servers every day and about a quarter of those I ping less than 100ms. What is the server distribution like, where are the servers, their number and what is the ping like?

5. Let us talk about competitive eSports in SEA

a. What is the competitive scene like down there?
b. Can you make money from being an FPS player?
c. Is there money in CoD?

6. Who shoutcast the games?

7. What tournament ruleset to you folks use?
8. What is the future of PAMIV/promod over there? What do you think of promod?
9. What are the three best teams right now in CoD 4 in Singapore? How do they stack up against the rest of the South East Asia?

10. You have seen a lot of demos from the Euro teams, how does the gaming in the far east stack up to the Europeans and North American teams?

How do you think an Asian team would do against a western team, like an EG or a LowLandLions?

11. While those of us in the west were focusing on i34 early this August...Singapore held the WCG 2008 World Cyber Games. How did JEDI do at WCG?

12. I have heard that you will be heading to Malaysia  (23rd Aug (Sat) - 7th Sept (Sun)) to do some gaming, where are you going exactly, is there a tournament going on there?
