Teamspeak 3

Communication in FPS games is always important. Certainly this is true in the Battlefield franchise and with BFBC2 coming at us soon, I thought this news would be very timely for all you aspiring commanders and team leaders out there:

TeamSpeak version 3 is upon us (thanks to pst*joker for the heads-up).

When it comes to voice comms, I know that many of you have, over the years, chosen to use Triton CI & Associates Inc's TeamSpeak over other VOIP products such as Ventrilo. The most common reasons for choosing TS over Vent are:

  • Money. TS is free, whereas you have to pay to use a Ventrilo server (though the application is free for the client).
  • Slots. You can have an unlimited number of clients connecting...though I'm sure there is an upper practical limit.

I personally have not liked TS (currently at version 2) due to the poor sound quality relative to Vent; however, I will be keeping my ears open for TeamSpeak 3, which will be in OPEN BETA, commencing Saturday the 19th of December.

The TS 3 beta will begin at:

  • 13:37 CET (Central European Time)
  • 07:37 EST (Eastern Standard Time)

How very leet of Triton!

TeamSpeak 3 is apparently a clean sheet redesign. Believe it or not, previous versions of TeamSpeak were written in Pascal...version 3 is now in C++.

Better Sound?

Apparently, TS 3's voice quality is superior to its predecessor. Sarcastically, I'll add that relative improvement in this area should not have been too difficult to manage:

From TeamSpeak's website:

TeamSpeak 3's voice quality is truly revolutionary. Featuring completely new codecs, automatic microphone adjustment, advanced noise reduction and echo cancelation, TeamSpeak 3 offers only the highest quality in voice communication. Users can finally say goodbye to echo, feedback, and background buzzing noises as the evolution of quality voice communication has arrived. In addition, we've significantly lowered the latency (the amount of time it takes for your voice to be "heard" on the other side) compared with TeamSpeak 2 and other voice communication software solutions.

You can learn more about TS 3 from these two YouTube vids.

Maybe I'm a bit harsh, but hopefully, TS 3's sound quality will be a bit better than that found in those vids!
