I had some serious BFBC2 withdrawl this past week, so I couldn't wait for the game to unlock on Steam. After a good hour or so of waiting for the download I was rewarded with a relatively straightforward install and got to play the SP right away.
The eye-candy is awfully sweet in BFBC2 and most of the time I just spent spinning around looking at the scenery. But as you know, I'm not much of an SP buff, so I tried to launch MP and like most of you know, there have been connectivity issues. Either I couldn't log into the EA servers or I'd get into a game server only to be booted soon after. But the one time I did manage to stay in a server, I had a very intense experience. It took a good couple of weeks back in the Beta to ween myself from CoD, but now I think I totally get the BF experience.
Oh and dedis and PunkBuster...how I missed you both.
Using MW2 the past four months made me forget how effective the combination of a good server admin and PB can be at making your gaming experience great. Having said that, I forgot how tempermental PunkBuster can be, especially if you don't let it phone home.
That's what happened last night to me, as a result of my Windows Firewall. To prevent getting the now infamous "You have been kicked from game" messages I had to shut down my firewall...not exactly a long term solution.
Fortunately, today PB has been updated and for those whose auto-update feature is not working (everyone looks at Jock)...here's the method to get the crucial files to allow you to connect to your fave PB-equipped server without getting kicked:
A. Open up the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common folder on your system.
B. Go and delete the Battlefield Bad Company 2 Beta folder. This folder undoubtedly also contains a version of Punkbuster.
Now you should connect without getting kicked. In the future, additional PB updates may give you the same issue. Just rinse and repeat the above methodology.
For those who had pre-bought the game through Steam and were looking for your Limited Edition weapons (namely, the Thompson, M1911, Tracer dart, Improved Vehicle Armor, Vehicle motion sensor and additional armor), you will need to do the following to enable these unlocks:
A. Go to Steam's Games tab and click on the BFBC2 link.
B. Click on "View game CD Key" and copy the "Promo code". Copying it to cache doesn't work. Just write it down. Now, go into the game and under the MP menu, type the code under the "Redeem Code" section of the menu.
C. Now you will have to go into a "ranked" game, then exit. Your unlocks should be there.
