CoD:BO First Look, Part V, "The PC Platform"
Once Mark Lamia showed the First Look invitees the two Single Player
levels, he invited PC lead, Cesar Stastny to talk about himself and the
PC development effort. Cesar has a larger than life personality:
<PCDev enters room and marches to the head of the room shouting...>
PCDev: "PC...PC....PC!! The PC version is awesome!"
Unknown: "That is all."
<laughter>
PCDev: "We
have the same team that was working on CoD:WW, concentrating on PC,
except right from the very beginning of the project. Making sure that
we can make the best PC game we can."
Josh Peckler: "Mod tools?"
PCDev: "Mod Tools? Is that a question?
<laughter>
That's
actually one of my favorite topics. From a development perspective,
it's a little too premature to answer that in a meaningful way. You can
see that we've made advances in the engine and along that come advances
in the tools we use internally. And while that helps us make a better
game it also can complicate the delivery of mod tools.
I will say that I'm a huge advocate of modding. I made my first mod on
the very first video game "Space War" and to give you an idea when that
was, it was a Star Wars mod and Star Wars was in its first run in
theaters."
Mark Lamia: "He's the oldest living developer on the planet!"
<Huge laughs!>
Unknown: "Dedicated servers, will there be any?"
PCDev: "Dedicated servers, another of my favorite topics."
<Josh Olin and PCDev unbutton their shirts to reveal T-Shirts with the words "Dedicated servers" written on them>
<Yaaaaa!>
PCDev: "We had dedicated servers planned for this title and have never wavered for a moment."
Josh Peckler: "Will you use Punk Buster?"
PCDev: "It's too early to answer that."
Mark Lamia: "We'll have anti-cheat..."
Aaron Peckler: "For the love of gawd, don't use VAC!"
PCDev: "But I can tell you, that you're going to
have an improved server browser. Not just from the perspective of
UI functionality as well..."
Josh Peckler: "Will we get server files, or will we have to purchase them?"
PCDev: "Too early to go into details."
Jock: "Console? Can players get access to the in-game console? Can we modify our player configurations?"
PCDev: "Purely from a developer perspective it's really too early to answer how we're going to handle that."
Jock: <writes an "x" in his note pad> "That's a 'NO' then." <laughter>
PCDev: "Not necessarily no. Um. Look. I like the
console as much as the next guy. We're just trying to make sure that we
make the game the way it's going to work best."
Josh Peckler: "Will we continue to get patches post release and will DLC continue to be free?"
Josh Olin: "We haven't finished the game yet."
Mark Lamia: "Cesar's job is to produce a bug free game as far as I'm concerned."
<laughter>
Unknown: "Gameplay or visual advancements?"
PCDev: "The PC will look better than all the other platforms."
Josh Peckler: "Will there be physics upgrade in the game?"
Lamia: "That's a design question. There's a lot
more destruction in the game. But it's not about blowing holes in walls
- that's a different game. We make choices about where our physics
destruction is going to be, because it's more important to have 60
fps..."
Josh Peckler: "Will we have DX11?"
PCDev: "No."
Aaron Peckler: "Will we have specific competition support. Like CoDTV...we know that didn't come out in CoD:WW?"
PCDev: "Our part did!"
Lamia: "We want to support the competitive community and we think we have great tools to do so. But without being specific".
...additional articles on the event will follow soon.
